Strep|to|my|cin [↑ Strepto- (1) u. ↑ -mycin], das; -s: Freiname für ein aus Streptomyces-griseus-Kulturen isolierbares Aminoglykosid-Antibiotikum, das heute noch gegen Tuberkulose eingesetzt wird.

Streptomycin
 
[zu griechisch mýkēs »Pilz«] das, -s, Streptomyzin, aus drei glykosidisch miteinander verknüpften Bestandteilen (Streptidin, Streptose und N-Methylglucosamin) bestehendes Antibiotikum, das von dem Strahlenpilz Streptomyces griseus gebildet wird und v. a. gegen gramnegative Kokken und Bakterien, daneben besonders gegen Tuberkelbakterien wirksam ist. Therapeutisch wird Streptomycin wegen seiner Nebenwirkungen (besonders auf den Gleichgewichts- und Gehörnerv) inzwischen nur noch als Reservemittel in Kombination mit anderen Tuberkulostatika bei Tuberkulose verwendet. Streptomycin wurde 1943 von S. A. Waksman und Mitarbeitern entdeckt.
